A Prescription for Community Involvement

How often does your pharmacy connect with the community on a personal level—outside the walls of your business? Participating in community initiatives brings your business into the neighborhood and shows your commitment to local customers. It can be simple and affordable to spread the message about the unique benefits of your pharmacy by reaching out locally.

Participate in a Health Fair

Cities, schools and even fitness facilities often have health fairs where patients can receive basic screenings for free or at a low cost. Your business will need to decide what your booth will offer during the event, such as blood pressure checks or information on vaccines.

A booth that simply distributes brochures is a little boring. Health fair attendees will probably expect more than just printed information. Hand out promotional items with the name of your pharmacy, offer an interactive element to your booth, or have a drawing for a gift card to shop at your business. If attendees fill out information to enter a drawing, they will be providing their names, emails, and possibly addresses to you, which you can then add to your contact list.

Serve as a Local Sponsor

As a small business, think local when it comes to sponsorships and event promotions where your name will be seen. Perhaps you could:

  • Have a float in a city parade
  • Run an ad in a community theater program or neighborhood newsletter
  • Provide funding for a school’s fitness or recreation event
  • Sponsor a Little League team or soccer club

These types of sponsorships don’t require you to attend an event but do allow you to demonstrate your interest and involvement in your community.

Offer Flu Shot Services

Before flu season arrives, consider offering flu vaccine services to a business, where employees can efficiently get their shots in the workplace. When providing this type of service, you will probably want to choose a company that is in an area of town near your pharmacy. During the event, you can have promotional materials about your pharmacy available for the employees. These items should serve a purpose, so they will be kept. For example, you could hand out a magnet with the number and hours of your pharmacy or a card with the phone number for poison control.

Network Locally

Work with the other businesses on your block or in your shopping area to promote one another. Talk about each other positively on social media. Plan special sales events or holiday celebrations as a unit. Also consider if nearby businesses, such as veterinarian offices, know what you provide. For example, you can contact vets to tell them you regularly fill prescriptions and provide compounding services for pets.

Busy neighborhood pharmacies may get wrapped up in the day-to-day routine. That’s why it can be beneficial to make your promotions more personal. Connecting with the community will help you gain new customers and retain existing ones while also building customer loyalty.
